In August 1951, he was posted to RAF Bridgnorth and soon contacted the local side, Wolverhampton Wanderers. They were led by Stan Cullis, the 'Iron Manager'; a physically intimidating man with a nose that had made acquaintance with many centre forwards' elbows. A devout Christian, he was known to celebrate big wins with a cup of tea.
